Inversion Studies

Why...

In our ground based inversion studies we will...
  • Examine how redistribution of the fluid in the lung affects the flow of air into and out of the lungs
  • Coordinate both animal and human experiments with mathematical modeling studies,
  • Integrate our results with preliminary data from the International Space Station and the KC-135
Hopefully, these experiments will help us understand why the hearts and lungs of astronauts exercising in space don’t work like they do on earth.

How...

We are using head-down tilt of up to 70-degrees to study changes in gas mixing and lung morphology in the presence of fluid accumulation in the space between the alveoli and capillaries in the lungs.

Who...

Mark Olfert, a post-doctoral research fellow in our division, is the primary contact for this study. If you are interested in discussing this research with him you may contact him by email.
